Fixing Missing Shutter Speeds on Canon EOS 7D and 7D Mark II

Why Are Some Shutter Speeds Missing on My Canon 7D / 7D Mark II?

The Canon EOS 7D and 7D Mark II are workhorse DSLRs, but their highly customizable nature can sometimes lead to confusing behavior. If you find that you can only select shutter speeds in large jumps (like 1/250 to 1/500, skipping 1/320 and 1/400) or if you are locked out of the ultra-fast 1/8000 range, your camera isn't broken. Usually, a specific Custom Function (C.Fn) has been toggled, or a "Safety Shift" is overriding your manual control. Because these cameras are designed for professional speed, they include deep menu settings that can limit your exposure increments to simplify operation—often by accident.

Purpose

The purpose of this tutorial is to help you regain Granular Exposure Control. By default, Canon DSLRs are set to 1/3-stop increments, giving you the most precision. If your camera is "missing" speeds, it is likely set to 1/2-stop or full-stop increments. Restoring these settings allows you to fine-tune your exposure without drastically changing your ISO or Aperture, which is critical for high-speed action and studio photography where light balance is delicate.

Use Case

Troubleshooting missing shutter speeds is necessary when:

  • Flicker Reduction: You need a specific speed (like 1/100 or 1/120) to sync with artificial lighting but the camera skips over them.
  • Second-Hand Gear: You've purchased a used 7D Mark II and the previous owner left custom "Shutter Speed Range" limits active.
  • Action Freezing: You are shooting sports but cannot reach the maximum 1/8000 speed due to an enabled electronic first-curtain shutter limitation.
  • Consistency: You are trying to match settings with a second camera body but the dial increments don't match.

Step by Step

1. Check Exposure Level Increments

The most common culprit for "missing" speeds is the increment setting.

  • Press the MENU button.
  • Navigate to the Custom Functions (C.Fn) tab (the orange camera icon).
  • Locate C.Fn I: Exposure - Exposure level increments.
  • Ensure this is set to 0: 1/3-stop. If it is set to 1/2-stop, you will skip many common shutter speeds.

2. Inspect Shutter Speed Range Limits

The 7D Mark II allows you to manually "lock out" certain speeds to prevent accidental overexposure.

  • In the C.Fn menu, look for Set shutter speed range.
  • Check if the "Highest shutter speed" is accidentally set to something lower than 1/8000.
  • Check if the "Lowest shutter speed" is capped (e.g., at 1/60), preventing you from doing long exposures.

3. Disable "Safety Shift"

If you are in Tv (Shutter Priority) mode and the camera won't let you pick a speed, "Safety Shift" might be forcing a change to prevent bad exposure.

  • Navigate to C.Fn I: Exposure - Safety shift.
  • Set this to Disable to give yourself full manual override, even if the camera thinks the image will be under/overexposed.

4. Flash Sync Limitations

If you have a flash or a trigger attached, the camera may limit your shutter speed to 1/250 (the X-sync speed).

  • Turn off your external flash or transmitter.
  • If the speeds return, you need to enable High-Speed Sync (HSS) on your flash unit to unlock speeds up to 1/8000.

5. Reset All Custom Functions

If you still can't find the missing speeds, a deep-buried setting (like HDR or Multiple Exposure) might be the cause.

  1. Go to the Setup Menu (yellow wrench icon).
  2. Select Clear all camera settings.
  3. Then select Clear all Custom Func. (C.Fn). This will return the shutter dial to factory behavior.

FAQ

Why can't I go slower than 1/30 in Video Mode?

In movie mode, your shutter speed is limited by your Frame Rate. If you are shooting at 60fps, the camera won't let you drop below 1/60. Switch to 24fps or 30fps to unlock slower shutter speeds.

Is my shutter button failing?

If the dial turns but the numbers don't change on the LCD, the Main Dial itself might be dirty. Try rotating it quickly for 30 seconds while the camera is off to clear any internal oxidation.

Why does my shutter speed blink in the viewfinder?

This is a warning that the current lighting conditions will result in an overexposed or underexposed image with your current Aperture and ISO. It doesn't mean the speed is "missing," just that it isn't ideal for the scene.

Disclaimer

The Canon 7D series has a mechanical shutter life rated for approximately 150,000 to 200,000 actuations. If the shutter is physically sticking or behaving erratically despite resetting all menu settings, it may require a mechanical replacement. This tutorial is based on firmware standards as of early 2026. Always back up your custom profiles to an SD card before performing a full factory reset.
